Arizona Strip Cave Biodiversity, Conservation, and Science Communication

Brief Abstract / Project Description
This Vertically Integrated Project (VIP) combines biological research and digital storytelling to investigate and communicate the biodiversity and conservation importance of cave ecosystems on the Arizona Strip. In partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, students conduct field-based research on cave-dwelling organisms while also producing documentary media that captures the scientific process and highlights the significance of these fragile environments. The project integrates ecological research, evolutionary biology, and film production to advance both scientific understanding and public engagement.

Project Details:

  • Document biodiversity within Arizona Strip cave systems
  • Assess evolutionary relationships between cave and surface populations (e.g., salamanders)
  • Conduct herpetological and bat surveys using visual and acoustic methods
  • Produce short-form documentaries and digital media highlighting the research and its impacts
  • Translate scientific findings into accessible, public-facing content
  • Curate biological specimens at the Barnum Museum of Natural History at Utah Tech University
  • Support land management and conservation through research and outreach
